Nigeria’s U-17 women’s forward Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has expressed delight after scoring her first goal at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, helping the Flamingos secure a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.
The win revived Nigeria’s campaign after their opening defeat to hosts Poland, giving the bronze medallists three important points as they pursue qualification for the knockout stage.
Adegbuyi acknowledged that the encounter at the Mohammed VI Football Complex was challenging but praised her teammates for securing the victory.
“The game wasn’t easy for us, but we tried our best… We were able to get our three points,” she said in a post-match interview.
The forward opened the scoring in the first half with a composed finish, marking a significant personal milestone in her first appearance at the tournament.
“I’m happy, I’m very, very excited cause this is my first goal in this tournament, at the biggest stage, yes,” she said.
Adegbuyi reiterated her excitement, describing the achievement as an important moment in her career.
“Scoring at this biggest stage of my life… this is just the beginning,” she said.
“I promise to make my family and the nation proud.”
The forward also pledged to maintain her focus and continue contributing to Nigeria’s campaign as the team seeks a place in the Round of 16.
With the victory over Puerto Rico secured, head coach Akeem Busari and his players have turned their attention to Friday’s decisive Group B clash against Korea DPR.
