The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed January 16, 2027, for the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Nigeria.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja, explaining that the new date replaces the earlier scheduled February 20, 2027 election.
According to the commission, the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will now hold on February 6, 2027.
The adjustment followed concerns raised by Nigerians over the earlier timetable, particularly the overlap with the Ramadan fasting period.
Some stakeholders had argued that conducting elections during Ramadan could affect voter turnout and the performance of electoral officials due to the physical demands of fasting.
INEC said the revised timetable is aimed at ensuring wider participation and smoother electoral operations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
