The Federal Government, FG has ordered the immediate shutdown of 47 Unity Colleges across the country as concerns grow over rising attacks on schools.
The decision follows the separate assaults on schools in Kebbi and Niger States, where students and staff were abducted, and an official was fatally shot. The incidents have intensified fears about the safety of learners and teachers in vulnerable areas.
In a circular issued on Friday, the Director of Senior Secondary Education in the Ministry of Education, Binta Abdulkadir, announced that the Minister of State for Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, had approved the temporary closure after reviewing the latest security reports.

According to the ministry, the step is precautionary and aimed at preventing further tragedy.
“The Minister has directed that 47 of the Federal Unity Colleges be closed with immediate effect due to the recent security challenges affecting some parts of the country,” the circular stated. “This measure is to safeguard our students and members of staff while security agencies work to address the situation.”
No timeline has been given for reopening, but officials say the government is working with security agencies to stabilise the affected areas and restore confidence in the school environment.
