NDLEA officer killed in Bonny Island drug raid has plunged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency into mourning following the death of one of its operatives, Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid, who was fatally injured during a high-risk operation in Rivers State.
The deadly incident occurred on Friday, February 6, 2026, when NDLEA operatives launched a coordinated raid on a notorious criminal enclave known as Ama Hausa in Bonny Island. The operation was part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating within coastal communities in Rivers State and beyond. Intelligence reports had earlier identified the area as a major hub for the storage and distribution of hard drugs.
During the raid, NDLEA officers successfully arrested six suspected drug traffickers and recovered a large cache of illicit substances. Items seized at the scene included cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, tramadol, and skunk (cannabis), all believed to be meant for distribution within and outside the state. The successful seizure was described by the agency as a significant breakthrough in its war against narcotics trafficking in the region.
However, the operation took a tragic turn when the alleged gang leader, Genesis George Benson, reportedly mobilised armed hoodlums to confront the operatives in an attempt to resist arrest and facilitate the escape of members of the syndicate. The situation quickly escalated into a violent clash as the suspects attacked the NDLEA team.
In the chaos that followed, the NDLEA officer killed in Bonny Island drug raid, Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid, sustained severe head injuries while bravely working to secure the area and prevent the suspects from fleeing. Despite the heavy resistance, NDLEA operatives stood their ground and eventually overpowered the attackers, ensuring that all six targets were arrested and taken into custody.
Mujahid was immediately rushed to the Bonny Island General Hospital for urgent medical attention. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries, paying the ultimate price in the line of duty. His death has sparked widespread reactions within security circles and among members of the public, who have commended his courage and dedication to national service.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), described Mujahid as a disciplined, fearless, and committed officer whose sacrifice would not be forgotten. Marwa praised the fallen operative for his gallantry and also commended the bravery of the officers who completed the mission despite the deadly assault.
According to Marwa, the successful outcome of the operation, which led to the dismantling of a major drug distribution hub, shows the agency’s determination to confront criminal elements head-on. He warned drug cartels and criminal gangs that any attack on NDLEA personnel is considered an attack on the Nigerian state and will attract severe consequences.
Alongside Benson, the NDLEA arrested ThankGod Okon, Shamsudden Isah, Muhammed Musa, Adamu Muhammed, and Muhammed Yusuf. The suspects are expected to face prosecution in accordance with the law after preliminary investigations are concluded. The agency said further investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the drug network who may have escaped during the operation.
The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to intensifying operations across drug-prone communities, stressing that the death of an officer would not weaken its resolve. Instead, the agency stated that the loss of the NDLEA officer killed in Bonny Island drug raid would serve as further motivation to clamp down harder on drug traffickers and dismantle criminal enclaves across the country.
