The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has seized several waste carts and arrested a suspect during an early morning enforcement operation on Lagos Island as part of efforts to curb illegal waste dumping in the area.
The Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, Mukaila Sanusi, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the operation followed targeted surveillance of unauthorised waste disposal activities within the axis.
According to the statement, LAWMA enforcement officers intercepted the waste carts at dawn in Isale-Eko during a coordinated operation aimed at disrupting unregulated waste movement and preventing the re-emergence of illegal dump points in locations earlier cleared by the agency.
The statement added that a 42-year-old man, Muritala Suleiman, was apprehended at about 1:31 a.m. while allegedly dumping refuse illegally at Tinubu Square, Lagos Island. The suspect was said to be from Zamfara State.
Sanusi noted that early-hour monitoring remains a critical enforcement strategy, as illegal dumping is often carried out under low visibility.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said sustained enforcement operations were necessary to deter offenders and protect areas that have been stabilised from renewed abuse.
LAWMA urged residents to comply with approved waste disposal channels and support efforts aimed at keeping public spaces clean and safe.
