The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has warned that any member of the Armed Forces of Nigeria involved in plotting or attempting to overthrow the democratically elected government will face the full wrath of the law.
Aneke described the recent alleged coup plot against the Bola Tinubu-led administration as “shameful, shocking and wholly reprehensible,” stressing that the military remains loyal to the Constitution and the current democratic government.
The Air Chief made the remarks on Wednesday during a strategic meeting with commanders at the Nigerian Air Force headquarters in Abuja. He said the primary duty of the military is to support civil authorities and safeguard democracy.
According to him, commanders at all levels must ensure discipline, unity and cohesion within the ranks while preventing any form of unlawful conduct.
Daily Trust reported that the number of military officers and civilians arrested in connection with the alleged October 2025 coup plot has risen to over 40. Families of those involved have appealed for leniency and fair trial.
Speaking before the meeting went into a closed-door session, Aneke said individuals found guilty of attempting to subvert democracy would be prosecuted in line with the law.
The Nigerian Air Force, he added, will continue to uphold constitutional order and resist any attempt to destabilise the country’s democratic system.
