The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has said Nigeria\u2019s recent drop in food inflation to single digits reflects current statistical trends but warned that broader inflation pressures are still significant.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement issued on Monday, the Chief Executive Officer of CPPE, Muda Yusuf, reacted to the January 2026 inflation figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).<\/p>\n

Data from the NBS showed that food inflation slowed to 8.89 per cent in January 2026, while headline inflation stood at 10.10 per cent. The latest figure represents the first time in over a decade that food inflation has fallen below 10 per cent. In contrast, food inflation was significantly higher at 29.63 per cent in January 2025 and 10.84 per cent in December 2025.<\/p>\n

The statistics office linked the moderation in food inflation to lower prices for several staple products, including grains, tubers, vegetable oils and protein items.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the development, Yusuf noted that the easing in price growth could create an opportunity for measured adjustments in monetary policy. However, he cautioned that decisions must be guided by data, especially as core inflation and the twelve-month average inflation rate remain relatively high.<\/p>\n

He further observed that while consumers may benefit from softer food prices, reduced price levels could negatively affect farmers\u2019 earnings and rural economic activity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
