The United States has announced the deployment of 200 troops to Nigeria to help train the Nigerian military in its fight against jihadist groups and armed gangs, marking a major boost in security cooperation between both countries.<\/p>\n
According to Nigeria\u2019s Defence Headquarters, the US troops Nigeria mission will focus on training and technical support, including helping Nigerian forces better coordinate air strikes with ground operations. The additional personnel are expected to arrive in the coming weeks and will join a small US team already operating in the country.<\/p>\n
US Africa Command confirmed the deployment, noting that the troops will not be involved in direct combat but will provide intelligence support and operational guidance as Nigeria battles insecurity across multiple regions.<\/p>\n
Nigeria continues to face insurgency in the northeast, banditry and kidnappings in the northwest, and recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the Middle Belt. Despite diplomatic tensions over how the violence is framed internationally, both countries have found common ground in strengthening military collaboration.<\/p>\n
The deployment follows a joint operation in December in which US intelligence supported Nigerian air strikes against militants in Sokoto State.
