Two persons were killed late Wednesday night when two fully loaded 40-foot container trucks collided along the Cele inward axis of the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway at Mile 2 in Lagos.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash claimed the life of the driver of one of the trucks, bearing registration number T-392 LA, as well as a suspected bystander whose presence near the articulated vehicles could not be immediately determined.
Officials disclosed that the deceased driver was trapped inside the mangled steering compartment and had to be extricated by the LASTMA Rescue and Recovery Team.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) collaborated with LASTMA to recover the bodies, while police officers from the Ilasa Police Division secured the accident scene.
The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later evacuated the remains.
Authorities said the fatal collision caused significant traffic disruption along the busy freight corridor before recovery efforts restored normal flow.
The case has been transferred to the Ilasa Police Division for further investigation into the cause of the crash.
General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families, describing the tragedy as a reminder of the risks associated with high-density freight movement.
He urged operators of articulated vehicles to maintain strict adherence to safety regulations, especially during nocturnal operations, to prevent avoidable accidents.
