The Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) has shut down operations of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company across Abuja, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger states following the dismissal of over 900 workers.
The action, which took effect on Wednesday, saw offices of the electricity distribution company sealed, a day after the union, led by its president, Joe Ajaero, picketed the firm’s headquarters in protest.
Ajaero said the dispute began about six months ago when the company assured that only workers nearing retirement would be affected, but alleged that younger staff were also laid off.
“The majority of those affected were not at retirement age… that is the height of deceit,” he said.
The union has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the company to address the matter or risk further industrial action that could disrupt electricity supply in the affected areas.
“If nothing is done within that time, we cannot guarantee power supply,” Ajaero warned.
