The Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the National Youth Service Corps, Abass Olalekan, has been arrested following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, on Tuesday.
Ariyo reportedly died from complications after terminating a pregnancy.
Sources allege Olalekan, who was reportedly in a romantic relationship with the deceased, was involved in the circumstances that led to her death.
Olalekan had announced her death verbally and mobilised corps members to organise her burial at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road, Abeokuta.
This incident comes barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, who was Ariyo’s friend, died under mysterious circumstances while serving under the same LG.
A police source confirmed Olalekan’s arrest, stating he is in custody at the State Command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta. Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the investigation is ongoing, but declined further comment on the LGI’s involvement.
“The case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Babaseyi said.
